Getting Sclerotherapy After Your Laser Vein Treatment.

So, you have had your laser treatment, what’s next? Most patients, about 90% or more, need adjunctive treatment after their laser procedure(s).  Typically, this treatment is Ultrasound Guided Therapeutic Sclerotherapy (USTST). About a month after your laser treatment our ultrasound tech will do a thorough exam, mapping any indwelling veins that are not functioning properly and still remain after the laser procedure. The preferred treatment to eliminate these veins is USTST.

USTST is the injection of a sclerosant into indwelling veins that were not affected by the laser treatment, using ultrasound guidance to see the veins. The sclerosant irritates and inflames the inner lining of the veins causing them to collapse and be absorbed by the body. Much like the laser treatment, the goal is to rid the legs of veins that are not viable to your overall circulation. Although you may not see these veins, they can be contributing to any large surface veins you may see.

Once these veins have been successfully treated and if you still have large ropey surface veins we will begin to treat those with Therapeutic Sclerotherapy (TST). In some cases, the larger veins on the surface may shrink after USTST because their source has been eliminated and the pressure to these veins has subsided.  However, the veins may still be visible and large enough to treat using TST. TST, like USTST, is the injection of a sclerosant into the large surface veins without the use of ultrasound. These treatments are done by certified sclerotherapy nurses using special light sources that enable her to see slightly below the surface.

Both of these adjunctive treatments can be approved by your insurance. Most policies require that the veins be above a certain diameter to get approval. At Illinois Vein Specialists, we will work with your insurance carrier for you to seek pre-approval for treatment. This treatment and insurance approval does not include spider veins, which are usually the last step in treatment.
