A lot of people associate varicose veins with “an older person problem” and picture bulging, ropey veins on the legs. However, age is actually not the primary cause of varicose veins: hereditary is the cause for over 80% of vein disease cases. While the symptoms of varicose veins can worsen over time and are more visible when someone is older, young people are not immune to the disease.
Since varicose vein disease is often hereditary, they can happen to anyone at any age. We’ve had patients come in who are in their teens and 20s. The most common thing we hear from these patients is that they thought vein disease and varicose veins only happen to older people and didn’t think much of their symptoms. However, these patients experience the same symptoms of heaviness and achiness in their legs even if they don’t have varicose veins.
In fact, vein disease is less likely to be visible in young people, as the disease and varicose veins have not had time to develop noticeable effects on the skin’s surface. Therefore, symptoms like pain, swelling, skin discoloration or poor wound healing have to be paid closer attention to in younger people as the most noticeable symptom of bulging and ropey veins are not yet visible.
Vein disease can develop at any stage in life and is always a medical concern regardless if varicose veins are visible on the skin or not. As vein disease will not go away on its own and can also lead to more serious health concerns, treatment is recommended to ensure a complete recovery.
