Are Varicose Veins  a sign of old age.

There are many common myths about varicose and spider veins. The reasons for many of these misconceptions include outdated treatments as well as a lack of specialization. Over the last decade, however, there have been a number of new medical specialties. One in particular and the newest medical Board Specialty--Phlebology (2008)--, has allowed certified practitioners to reveal the truth behind many of these common myths.

The most common factor for determining whether you will develop varicose veins is due to heredity, not age. If one parent has varicose veins there's a 40% chance that you do to. If both parents have them then you are almost guaranteed to have them at some point in you life.  Additionally, because vein disease is hereditary, they can develop as young as 10 years of age.  The reasons that most patients discover them when they are older is due to the fact that they most likely developed them earlier in life and time has allowed for the disease to progress and manifest itself visibly. The best advice is to be guided by symptoms not age.
