At What Age You Can Develop Varicose Veins?

Posted on August 10, 2015 by Dr. Stephen Rivard

Varicose veins disease is a disease that can occur in anyone. Whether you are male or female, varicose vein disease is hereditary and your chances of getting them at some point in your life is one out of four.  Although varicose veins are fairly common, many people are under the misconception that they generally do not occur until you are much older.  This fact is simply not true.

In fact, recent studies in Germany have discovered that varicose veins can occur in children as young as 10 years of age.  We have seen patients at our office in their teens with serious conditions of the disease.  The important thing to understand is that common symptoms like the large bulging veins that are most associated with the disease do not need to be present in order for you to have underlying complication with venous insufficiency.

Vein disease is real and requires real medical attention regardless of your age or symptoms. Being aware of the symptoms, however, can be useful in determining the likelihood of their presence.  Some of the most common varicose vein symptoms include: swelling in the legs, pain, chronic restless legs, heavy achy feelings in the legs, discoloration in near the ankles and calves and of course bulging veins and spider veins.

Remember, it is better to know then to suffer needlessly for year. If left untreated venous hypertension (varicose veins) can cause significant damage to your body both internally and externally. Getting a vein screening never hurts if you think you might have any of these symptoms to rule out the possibility and to reduce damage.
