What to expect in your initial consultation for varicose veins

Posted on June 10, 2013 by Dr. Stephen Rivard

Scheduling an Initial Consultation for Varicose Veins at Illinois Vein Specialists. What to Expect.

Initial Consultation for Varicose VeinsIn order to begin your treatment at Illinois Vein Specialists, it is important to schedule a consultation. During the initial consultation for varicose veins, there will be a few things that take place: a careful review of your medical or clinical history, a physical examination of your veins using a doppler duplex ultrasound, and a discussion with you to answer any questions you may have regarding your symptoms, treatment and/or follow ups, including insurance coverage and medical letters of necessity.  These steps will allow our certified staff, and myself, to better asses your particular needs and inform you of the best option(s) for treating your varicose or spider veins.

An important consideration to the initial consultation for varicose veins is determining the expectations and anticipated results of the patient. Patients often desire a cosmetic fix to their visible veins, although more frequently patients seek additional medical relief from many of the related symptoms of vein disease, including pain, swelling and fatigue.

Additionally, when discussing your expectations, patients frequently want to know the seriousness of their disease and what can be done in addition to vein treatment.  Many of these questions and/or concerns will depend on the severity of your venous condition and your medical history.  At Illinois Vein Specialists, we pay close attention to these factors, in addition to information regarding the onset and duration of the symptoms resulting from your varicose and/or spider veins.  It is common for patients to be relatively unaware of some of the issues related to their vein disease, as some symptoms may not immediately effect their daily life.  Since vein disease can develop as early as 10 years of age (read more on this...), and the pain or symptoms associated increase gradually with the worsening of the disease, most patients are not even aware of their vein disorders until the disease has manifested into large bulging veins or colorful spider veins.

Whether your purpose in seeking treatment is medical or cosmetic in nature, it is important to remember that vein disease is real disease and may require more than one procedure before obtaining the desired results. At Illinois Vein Specialists we greet you with a smile and want you to have a "joyous experience" throughout your entire procedure. We look forward to meeting you soon.
