Are Varicose Veins Just a Cosmetic Concern?

Are Varicose Veins Just a Cosmetic Concern?

Common Myths on Varicose Veins. Varicose Veins are Not Just a Cosmetic Problem.

A common misconception among the medical community is seen regarding varicose veins and the attention that is paid beyond their cosmetic concerns.  Many doctors will frequently tell their patients not to worry about their varicose veins, as they are merely 'cosmetic' in nature and pose no real medical concerns to your health. It's the common twist on an old adage..."If it doesn't hurt, don't do anything about it."

Varicose veins are a sign of an important vascular insufficiency and compromise. Like arterial hypertension and dental cavities, the insidious nature of chronic venous hypertension is progressively destructive and should be treated before pain and other symptoms occur. Additionally, it is common for patients to be relatively unaware of some of the issues related to their vein disease, as some symptoms most common with spider and varicose veins may not immediately effect their daily life.  Since vein disease can frequently occur in women who have given birth or in men who have had sports related injuries, and the pain or symptoms associated increase gradually over time, most patients are not even aware of the seriousness of their vein disorders until the disease has manifested into large bulging veins or colorful spider veins.

So Why are Doctors Unaware?

It is safe to say that most physicians are unaware of the possibilities varicose vein treatment can have on the medical world. This is due to a number of reasons.  Until very recently the surgery to remove varicose veins was known as 'Vein Stripping'.  Because stripping veins was somewhat barbaric in nature many doctors discouraged their patients from having anything done. Recent advancements in technology, however, have revolutionized the way varicose and spider veins are treated, are less painful, far less invasive and much more effective. Additionally, the practice of Phlebology (varicose and spider vein treatment) is the newest Board Certified sub-specialty in medicine (2008).  Therefore, most doctors did not have an opportunity to learn about the study of vein disease in great detail as it applies to treating variosities in the body.
