Doctors are lying to you when they say varicose veins is just something cosmetic.

Varicose veins are a sign of an important vascular insufficiency and compromise. Like arterial hypertension and dental cavities, the insidious nature of chronic venous hypertension is progressively destructive and should be treated before pain and other more serious symptoms occur.

Most physicians are unaware of the possibilities that varicose vein treatment can have on the medical world. This is due to a number of reasons. Until only recently the surgery to remove varicose veins was known as 'Vein Stripping'. While this older treatment has been shown to actually cause more damage than resolve the issue, many doctors are STILL performing this procedure. This procedure however, i.e. stripping veins, was considered somewhat barbaric in nature, so many doctors discouraged their patients from having anything done at all. Recent advancements in technology, however, have revolutionized the way varicose and spider veins are treated, are less painful, far less invasive and much more effective. Additionally, the practice of venous and lymphatic medicine (varicose and spider vein treatment) is the one of the more recent Board Certified sub-specialty in medicine (2008). Therefore, most doctors did not have an opportunity to learn about the study of the disease in great detail and still don't really understand the medical implications of the disease.

Something to consider is to ensure that when seeking treatment you find a doctor that understand the medicine and disease to properly treat your varicose veins. One of the best ways to know if they have this knowledge is to ask if they are certified in venous and lymphatic disease. If they do not carry those credentials, be careful before receiving treatment, otherwise you could actually suffer from improper care that could cause more damage down the road.
