On January 19, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s father passed away. In an Instagram post following his death, Dwayne shared a long video to thank his fans for the support and explain what had happened. His dad had been under the weather and battling a cold. During his fight, he experienced deep vein thrombosis. Deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot usually isolated in the lower extremities. While deep vein thrombosis itself isn’t fatal, if the clot breaks free it leads to pulmonary embolisms, which are extremely dangerous. Unfortunately, Dwayne’s father was not able to get his deep vein thrombosis treated prior to suffering from a pulmonary embolism. He passed away very quickly from a heart attack due to a clotted lung.
While we’d like to say that this is a rare occurrence, it’s not. The only difference is that usually, when people pass away from DVT or pulmonary embolisms, there isn’t any news generated about it. However, DVT is very common and is caused from varicose veins. Over 40 million people in the United States alone suffer from varicose veins that can lead to DVT—that’s a lot of people who could be in Dwayne, or his father’s, position at any time. While this can be scary to hear, it’s important to understand that DVT is completely preventable.
The first step is diagnosing varicose veins. If you have them, you’ll usually notice as they cause a substantial change in the cosmetics of your legs. Varicose veins appear to be bulging out of your skin and are blue to purplish in color. In addition to the cosmetic appearance of varicose veins, a lot of people experience fatigue, swelling, itchiness, and even pain or discomfort in the legs and feet. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to schedule an appointment with a board-certified vein specialist.
Working with a board-certified vein specialist, like the ones at Illinois Vein Specialist, will ensure that your varicose veins are treated before they develop deep vein thrombosis. This is an easy, straightforward, and painless way to prevent a premature death like the one that Dwayne’s father experienced. Using a small laser, your varicose veins are targeted and re-absorbed back into your body. This allows your blood to flow redirect into a healthy vein so that you reduce your chances of developing clots and circulation problems. We are truly sorry for Dwayne’s loss and Illinois Vein Specialist is here to help others avoid suffering through the same heartache.
