Exercises For Varicose Veins

Varicose veins often bring symptoms of discomfort, swelling, and sometimes pain to the legs. While many people are able to continue their exercise routine despite varicose veins, there are a few low impact exercises that are specifically beneficial to add to any workout routine if you are suffering from varicose veins.

These exercises can help alleviate some of the discomfort associated with varicose veins. They focus on decreasing blood pooled in varicose veins that causes unwanted pressure.

Leg Lifts

Lie on your back and lift your leg to 45-degree angle and alternate between both legs. Elevating your legs will improve vein blood return to the heart. 

If it is too difficult to raise your legs in the air, you can bend your legs at the knee and lift your legs in a marching motion.

Heel and Toe Lifts

Stand with feet shoulder width apart and raise heels off the floor. After a few repetitions of heel lifts, switch to toe lifts. Lean against a wall and lift your toes and the front part of your foot off the ground to balance on your heels. Repeat this exercise several times as well.

Bicycle Lifts

Bicycle Lifts are a great way to promote blood circulation through your legs. Lie on your back and raise legs in the air. Start moving your legs in a circular motion, imitating the motion of riding a bicycle.


If stationary exercise isn’t your thing, walking is also a great way to stimulate circulation in your legs. Remember to wear comfortable shoes with plenty of support! 

All of these exercises are designed to improve vein circulation in the legs.
