Varicose and Spider Vein Treatment: Associated Costs and Insurance Coverage
Frequently, one of the first questions most patients ask us is “how much does treatment cost?”. Although there is no designated formula for this answer, most patients are pleased to find out that medical procedures for varicose vein removal, such as Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT), can be a covered benefit under your insurance plan. Traditionally, insurance companies would only cover in-patient procedures that were performed in a hospital setting using treatment methods such as vein stripping. However, today insurance companies now recognize newer more effective treatment options that are far less invasive and performed by certified practitioners in out-patient/clinical settings. That is to say that insurance companies do recognize the importance of treating your varicose veins, and thus find it to be a medically necessary procedure.
During the initial consultation at Illinois Vein Specialists, our Board Certified Phlebologist will provide a thorough examination using an ultrasound which will determine whether you have what is known as “venous reflux”. Venous reflux is similar to high blood pressure in the sense that the veins, which are normally a low pressure system, suffer from high pressure that inhibits the blood in the particular vein(s) from being pumped back to the heart. After reviewing the results the doctor will discuss the appropriate plan of treatment for you and will write the proper letters of medical necessity to your insurance provider. We will update you when you are approved for treatment and to what extent the procedures will be covered.
The amount covered often depends on your insurance provider and your particular insurance policy. Your responsibility may be any deductible, co-insurance, and/or co-pays. Illinois Vein Specialists focuses solely on treating and diagnosing varicose and spider veins, and for patients with further detailed questions, we have a designated Insurance Specialist that can work with your needs and insurance carrier to ensure you receive the best possible reimbursement.
In regards to spider veins, 25% of patients seeking treatment, whether initially for purely cosmetic reasons or because of other noticeable varicosities (larger bulging veins), can be covered by insurance as well. Meaning that, roughly 25% of the time for patients that come in to treat their noticeable spider veins are diagnosed as having underlying venous reflux (varicose veins) which can actually cause symptoms such as spider veins, and thus are considered medical, not cosmetic. Therefore, it never hurts to get a consultation even if you only notice spider veins.
