Illinois Vein Specialists Limb Recovery Mission Abroad.

For those who never read the articles printed in the Suburban Women Magazines, we wanted to share some of the things that we have been doing outside the office, including our mission trip we took in February 2013.

The Story

It has been almost two years since our first mission trip, but I still remember it like yesterday - the destination, Manila, Philippines.  Why Manila?  In 2012 we had a visit from a rep that was selling compression wound wraps. When she entered she felt welcomed, and as customary we took her around the office to further demonstrate what we do and why it is important to us.  We did not buy any compression wraps that day (as we already had a full stock) but the rep quickly went home to tell her husband to come in and seek treatment for his bulging veins.  At her insistence he eventually came in and also experienced the same welcoming familiarity his wife described.

His treatment went so well for him that he soon can back with a proposition.  He and his wife were both from the Philippines and he traveled their often to sell his wound wraps, but had never seen or heard of the treatment offered by our office.  He believed that if we were willing he could work with local doctors to find patients that would be in great need, and he would be our liaison on the trip.

Diabetes, amputation, and venous stasis ulcers, and varicose veins have been a significant challenge for many patients, particularly for those who lack the proper education and/or technology to offer the right treatment.  We understood this well, and wanted to be able to make a difference if we could, and at the very least offer care to those in need. In Feb ’13 we were off across the globe to help patients who were on lists for amputation suffering severely from venous leg ulcers. We knew that if we could see them first we could treat them with endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) and that their leg ulcers would heal - as we have done many times here in the States.

When arriving we worked with a local Filipino doctor who specialized in wound care and had some of his worst patient’s lined up for us. We treated 7 patients in total, and write this article now because we were recently informed by our associate physician in the Philippines that all of the cases have healed completely.

We look forward to our next adventure and have appreciated the opportunity to give back not just to our local communities, but to those in need around the world.
