New Technologies Dispel Old Myths Surrounding Varicose Vein Treatment

Posted on November 15, 2017 by Dr. Stephen Rivard

A lot of the myths associated with vein disease are rooted in the antiquated practice of vein stripping. Vein stripping was the primary way to treat varicose veins before new technologies developed that proved to be safer and more effective at treating varicose veins. Read on to find out more about vein stripping and new technologies:

Vein Stripping

Vein stripping was the normal way to remove varicose veins before recent technologies made the procedure less invasive and safer. Vein stripping has far more risks associated with the procedure including blood clots, infections in the leg, and numbness from nerve damage. As vein stripping requires an anesthetic, the surgery is normally done in a hospital. Due to the invasive nature of the surgery, the recovery time is long and patients are limited in how much physical activity they could do for a long time.

Vein stripping is often not 100% effective. A lot of people who had the surgery found their varicose veins came back.

Endovenous Laser Therapy is a relatively new, less invasive way to treat varicose veins. Unlike vein stripping, there is virtually no recovery time: patients are able to walk out of our office that day and resume their normal daily life. It is also a more effective procedure: the recurrence rates are below 5%.

The key to this modern treatment is the use of a duplex ultrasound. With the patient in a standing position, the ultrasound is able to map out the size and location of all of the diseased veins that are not visible to the naked eye. The accuracy of the ultrasound ensures all the diseased veins are removed and that they do not reappear later in life.

Unlike vein stripping, the Endovenous Laser Therapy is a non-surgical procedure and can be done in a outpatient vein specialist office. Patients are able to walk out of our office after their procedure versus having to stay at the hospital.

Vein surgery has been seen as an invasive procedure with a long recovery time. With new technology in the field, varicose vein surgery has become a minimally invasive and easy procedure that requires virtually no recovery. On top of that, it is a more effective treatment that eliminates varicose veins for good.
