Say No To Vein Stripping: 2 Alternatives for Vein Treatment

Posted on September 28, 2015 by Dr. Stephen Rivard

Varicose vein treatments have significantly changed in the last decade. Previous to the newer treatments offered, many older adults where left with only one treatment - vein stripping. As many have learned the hard way, vein stripping is no longer a recommended treatment for varicose veins (in fact it was only saved for patients with severe cases originally). The reason being is that the surgery is painful and often causes more damage to other veins. Furthermore, vein stripping surgery does not fully resolve the underlying vein problem. The veins are literally stripped from the legs often damaging the branch veins and causing significant pain and inflammation. Possible complications of vein stripping are damage to lymphatic tissue leading to chronic leg swelling and also damage to surrounding nerves leading to numbness. The surgery requires long periods of downtime with efficacy rates being around to 50%. Frequently, patients have to revisit their doctor to have further work done. The point is get the work right the first time, and treat your vein problem. Listed below are 2 alternatives for varicose and spider vein treatment.

1.) Endovenous Laser Treatment

Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) is a minimally invasive procedure that take less than an hour to complete. Patients experience little to no discomfort during the procedure. EVLT is highly effective for treating varicose. The use of an ultrasound guides the doctor to the varicosities needing treatment and where the use of a laser light targets the tissue and to seal the vein shut. The treated veins then dissolve into the blood stream, and the healing process starts immediately.

2.) Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (Echo-Sclerotherapy)

Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (also known as Echo-Sclerotherapy) is another clinical setting procedure and is an effective alternative to vein stripping. Generally, the procedure is performed under the discretion of the certified vein doctor and is done by using a foam based sclerosant. The doctor will inject the sclerosant while using the ultrasound as a visual guide enabling the treatment to be more accurate and effective. Because the veins treated are often below the surface of the skin, the ultrasound acts as the primary tool to to guide a needle into the abnormal vein and deliver the right amount of sclerosing medication to dissolve the lining of the blood vessel and seal the vein.
