One of the most common statements I hear from patients when they come in is, "I waited to seek treatment because I was told that my varicose veins were merely cosmetic... and if they didn't hurt I didn't need to seek treatment." While there are many common misconceptions or myths about varicose and spider veins, this is probably one of the most harmful ones still circulating today. There are many reasons that these myths about varicose veins are still so widely disseminated.
The reality is that many of these misconceptions stem from a number of factors including antiquated treatments as well as a lack of specialization. However, with recent advancements in treatment over the last decade and with the adoption of one of the newest medical Board Specialties (Venous and Lympathic Medicine - 2008), the truth behind many of these common myths have been proved untrue.
The myth that varicose veins are purely cosmetic and do not need to be treated is certainly one of the most common myths told by many. The unfortunate thing about this statement is that not only is this medically proven to be untrue, the belief in this statement often leads to unnecessary suffering and seriously damaging to ones health. Although it is commonly told that if your veins cause you no physical pain then you don’t need to seek medical attention, this has proved to be the exact opposite advice to be given.
In fact, due to the nature, lack of education about the subject, and prolonged onset of varicose veins, one can suffer needlessly for years, while not being able to even associate the pain to one primary cause, like venous hypertension. This is particularly true if you are told that your bulging veins are simply not the cause of any health effects to the body besides the negative aesthetics. The truth is that if you do have an underlying issue of venous insufficiency or venous hypertension (varicose veins) the pain resulting from this real disease can progressively increase resulting in more serious damage to your body. Some of the worst side effects from untreated varicose veins can include: venous ulcerations, restless leg syndrome, and even things like deep vein thrombosis which can be very serious.
The point I try to teach to my patients and to the general public in these articles is that varicose veins is considered a medical, yet diagnosable and fully treatable condition that many suffer from. It’s very common, and should be treated regardless of any noticeable pain. We have teated patients as young as 15 years of age and as old as 90, both men and women alike. Treatment is relatively simple, covered by most insurance companies and allows you to go back to work the same day if necessary. My advice is that if you are unsure about your varicose veins, seek a consultation to rule out the possibility of vein disease.
