What to Expect After Undergoing Treatment for Vein Disease

Many patients are unsure about what to expect after they have undergone treatment for their varicose veins. Thankfully, vein treatments are non-invasive and generally pose little risk for complications during recovery. Your physician will explain detailed aftercare instructions and answer any questions you might have that are specific to your individual case.

To give a better idea of what to expect for those considering seeking treatment for vein problems, we have compiled answers to common questions patients ask about typical recovery experiences:

How Long Will it Take to Fully Recover?

Recovery time varies slightly based on treatment method, but the short answer is not long! We treat varicose veins with endovenous laser treatment, which begins the healing process immediately following the procedure. This method has a 93 – 100 percent success rate. Some patients experience tenderness for a few days post treatment. The recovery period for sclerotherapy can depend on the size of the veins treated. There are some restrictions but only for 48 hours post treatment.

What Does Aftercare Involve?

For endovenous laser treatment, physicians strongly recommend wearing compression stockings for one week, taking over-the-counter NSAIDs like ibuprofen, and carrying on with normal activities immediately.

Sclerotherapy is typically used for treating superficial varicose and spider veins. Physicians require wearing compression stockings and avoiding things like hot baths, saunas, and cardiovascular exercise for 48 hours.

Will My Varicose Veins Return After Treatment?

If treated properly by a trained physician at the source of the problem, there is less than a 2% chance they will return. Older treatment methods were less effective, causing many to seek treatment more than once, but current techniques are much more effective and certainly more permanent.

Procedures like endovenous laser therapy allow physicians to treat varicose veins at their source.  These newer techniques are more effective, less painful, and require little to no downtime.
