When is the best time to get you varicose or spider veins treated?

Varicose_veins_both_legsVaricose veins - those unsightly bulging things protruding from the sides of your legs - are often an annoyance and almost always require treatment.  Knowing that you may need treatment for your spider or varicose veins is certainly a start in the right direction; but when is the best time to actually have them treated? For many of us, the answer is as soon as possible as varicose vein disease is a real disease with significant consequences if left untreated.  However, getting them treated immediately is not always on the top of our agendas and often we find patients waiting for a certain time of the year to seemingly “fit it in”.

The truth is that for those patients desiring to have their legs looking better by the spring or summer months - the best time to get their legs treated is now for a few reasons.  First, while the treatment for varicose and/or spider veins are relatively quick procedure(s) it is common for patients to need more than one treatment.  Many times a patient will need 3-4 treatments to truly see the results they were hoping to see, and more importantly to completely treat the source of their underlying venous insufficiency.

Second, there are a few steps that need to occur before you actual have your vein treatment - e.g. you need to get medical approval from your insurance company and establish a treatment plan.  Lastly, although the recovery process starts immediately it may take a few weeks for all of your varicose veins to be completely reabsorbed into the blood stream with no more signs bruising and for all of your smaller spider veins to disappear.

Getting the right vein treatment comes with the right knowledge and reasonable expectations about your desired outcomes. In the end, the main importance is that you seek help from a trained vein specialist regardless of when you decide to treat your veins to ensure you get the best possible outcome.
