Why Laser Vein Treatment is the Preferred Method

Why Laser Vein Treatment is the Preferred Method

Why Laser Vein Treatment is the Preferred Method. Clinical Trial Compares Treatments.

A recent study conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine collected data from 11 varicose vein centers in the United Kingdom which compared treatments for vein disease - finding endovenous laser therapy to be the best option available today for the treatment of the saphenous vein system (medical not necessarily cosmetic vein treatment).

The randomized study pulled the results of nearly 800 participants all treated for varicose vein disease between the periods of 2008 - when the US recognized venous and lymphatic medicine as a certified medical specialty for diagnosing and treating varicose and spider veins - through 2012.  All of the participants underwent one of three forms of treatment tested: traditional vein stripping to surgically remove the veins, sclerotherapy (i.e. using a foam sclerosant to essentially dissolve the veins), and sealing the veins via ultrasound guided endovenous laser ablation techniques.

The participant treatment results were then reviewed after a period of 6 months, considering such factors as the patient’s disease-specific quality of life and other factors like treatment complications and clinical success rates. The results demonstrated that the efficacy rates for laser treatment were generally higher, while complication rates were lower, than traditional surgery.
