Lymphedema and its relationship to Varicose Vein Disease.
Vein disease and lymphatic disease often go hand in hand and are commonly seen by varicose vein specialists. The reason being that both diseases cause a similar symptom frequently found in patients that suffer from venous insufficiency - leg swelling.
Lymphedema, also referred to as lymphatic obstruction, is caused when there is a blockage in the circulatory and immune systems (the lymphatic system) that prevents lymphatic fluids from being released back into the blood stream. The pressure from the increased fluid collects in the fatty tissues under your skin eventually causing swelling (or edema). Lymphedema can be caused by surgery or radiation therapy and, like varicose vein disease, is hereditary.
While most patients suffering from leg swelling seen in our office only have varicose vein disease, it is important to have a working knowledge of both diseases. This is also one of the primary reasons why all of our patients undergo a thorough initial consultation using a Doppler duplex ultrasound examination to determine the true source of their pain and swelling. Only after such examination can we determine the proper treatment needed, and work with the patient’s primary care physician to inform them if additional treatment is recommended.
