Why Board Certified Vein Specialist is so Important.

Treating your Varicose Veins can be scary enough... that's why it is important to see a Board Certified Vein Specialist.

Many patients seek treatment for their varicose veins for a number of reasons, but often fail to get the proper treatment they need. This is a story shared by one of our patients, Darlene Schuette, describing just that. Our patient’s share their stories with you out of a desire to educate more people who may have potential issues with vein disease so that they may seek proper care before the disease gets worse. Generally, these stories remain anonymous, but Darlene asked to share her name.

It has been 15 years since Darlene Schuette was first treated for varicose veins. She knew very well that she had them as she inherited her bulging veins from both sides of the family. Although it was many years ago she still remembers the experience as if it were yesterday. At the time, Darlene was in her late 50s and had a real hard time getting out of the car as her legs were heavy and swollen. She needed help and went to a doctor not knowing what to expect.  Unfortunately, her doctor did not fully inform her of what procedures were needed or offered at the time one what was going to take place. Darlene was uncomfortable from the start and as they put her to sleep she remembered asking why this was needed and the doctor said that it was common to do so. Darlene, thinking back, stated "they had me with my feet up for many hours, and the surgery lasted two days as I needed to come back the next day to finish." When she woke in pain she was informed that it would take a few weeks for her leg to heal and that she would have to

wait until then to return for the surgery on her other leg. Darlene was eventually informed that the procedure she endured was  called "vein stripping", but no one, not even the doctor had thoroughly informed her of this until months later. Darlene noticed that he legs did eventually feel better, but she mentioned that "it never took care of the whole problem, because after a few years passed the pain and swelling came back".

Darlene finally went to see another doctor for her veins, but this time she was told that she needed to undergo as a cosmetic procedure known as Scelrotherapy and that insurance would not cover the treatment.  After multiple sessions she thought to herself, "this is ridiculous because it never totally cured the problem, and I kept coming back and they would get better for a bit, but would keep coming back." One day while Darlene was reading the paper she noticed an ad for laser vein treatment and an article explaining the procedure. She knew right then as a little voice inside her head said, "that's who you need to see... this doctor already told me more than any other I had been to before."  However, like many who have had the misfortune of receiving improper care or vein stripping in the past, Darlene was scared to go through another vein procedure.  Eventually, her varicose veins had become so painful and her legs so swollen that she started asking her medical doctor if she should get vein care and was recommended to Dr Stephen Rivard. When Darlene came into Illinois Vein Specialists her legs were so swollen that she could not even wear compression stockings any more. Her legs were heavy, with large bulging veins, which she mentioned "got way worse after the last procedure with the previous doctor."

During her initial consultation Darlene was fully informed of every procedure that would be required. She received Endovenous laser therapy at IVS and has since recovered from all of her associated varicose vein symptoms; her legs are no longer swollen, in fact her legs in the thigh area have gone down an inch and a half and her ankles have gone down an inch.  She stated, "this is what I had hoped for when I started doing my legs!"
