Will I need these (varicose) veins later on? What if I have had previous vein removal, can you treat more veins?
Many patients ask questions regarding the fact that we are treating veins from their body that upon treatment dissolve into the blood, often worried that they will in some way need them later on. Frequently, a patient will inquire about losing veins that may potentially be needed for something like a heart bypass, or whether (for patients that have had previous vein stripping, etc) they can even remove any more veins.
While it is true that procedures such as heart bypass require veins that may be treated during common varicose vein procedures like endovenous laser ablation, the veins that are treated during such EVLA procedures are no longer able to perform their proper function. Bulging varicose veins are actually useless to heart surgeons as they are already diseased unhealthy veins. When veins become varicose the valves that normally help pump blood back to the heart break, eliminating their use within the body. In fact, the proper treatment of these veins actually improves the body’s circulation and immediately redirects the blood flow towards properly functioning veins.
Moreover, the venous system is a vast network of interconnected veins with much built-in redundancy with nearly 400 times the amount of veins actually needed. Additionally, the only veins generally treated are superficial veins, and are of minor importance even when they are healthy.
It is important to remember that vein disease is real disease and requires immediate medical attention regardless if you have pain.
