Yes, Men Can Have Varicose Veins Too.

Varicose veins are quite common, with a quarter of the US population suffering from this disease. However, contrary to the belief that varicose veins are mainly a women’s concern, men are also at risk of developing varicose veins. In fact, by age 50, thirty-five percent of the entire US male population will suffer from a venous disorder.

Why? Because varicose vein disease is a real disease and is hereditary - therefore it effects you regardless of your gender. If you have one parent that has suffered from varicose veins, you have about a 35% chance of developing them yourself. If both parents have the disease, then your chances are significantly increased to nearly 95%.

While there are a few reasons that women tend to develop the disease more frequently then men - particularly as the result of multiple pregnancies - men often have the disease, but choose to ignore it.  Most commonly, men will ignore the pain or tired feeling in their legs, simply playing it off as a symptom of older age, their work environment, or because it really doesn’t stop them from normal daily activities.

However, the misconception that if it doesn’t hurt you don’t need to get it looked at or treated can lead to serious consequences - e.g. edema, leg ulcers, deep vein thrombosis and blood clots to name a few.  What men don’t realize is that the treatment of their varicose veins could not only help them sleep at night, but also increase their ability to walk the golf course, participate in their favorite intramural squash games, or get back on the tennis court.

By treating your veins using effective treatments like endovenous laser therapy (EVLT), you can alleviate the unnecessary swelling and pain caused by your chronic venous insufficiency and increase your overall blood flow.  As an added bonus, treatments last under an hour and do not require any down time allow you to get back to work the same day.
